When you think ‘criminal investigation’ and ‘digital forensics’ it is natural to conjure up images of those things that we all too often see in the news – murder, drugs, human trafficking, Rape and Serious Sexual Assault (RASSO). But it can be a great deal more diverse than that and our work just as vital for supporting the investigation of other types of offence.
Our latest case for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is an excellent example of the contribution we make to other areas of enforcement.
Our forensic investigation specialists were called in to probe the creation of fake FSA salmonella certificates by a meat producer. They observed the sending of a PDF certificate to an IT firm who then unlocked it for editing by converting it to a .doc file; this was repeatedly edited and printed over the next few months. And then when the FSA changed its logo and signatory, a new fake certificate template was created to reflect this - and we again observed that this new fake certificate was duly edited and printed over and over until the day before the exhibits were seized.
The team received some great feedback from the FSA investigator following the guilty verdict passed down by the magistrates on what was deemed a very high culpability case.
“I would like to personally thank you all for your hard work in gathering the evidence that had been recovered from the computers that were recovered from the premises. There is no doubt that the evidence you were able to extract in relation to the false documents was crucial in the defendant’s decision to plead guilty.”
